Garner Pruitt began studies on the trumpet at age 9.  He lists his early trumpet influences as Clifford Brown, Freddie Hubbard, Blue Mitchell, Lee Morgan and Chet Baker.  During college, he studied jazz with John Prince at CSU Long Beach and studied trumpet with trumpet teacher Claude Gordon and composition with Ken Miller at Harbor College.  He toured Europe with the CSU Long Beach Jazz band, playing at the Montreux and North Sea Jazz festivals. While in Boise, he could be found sitting in with Gene Harris at the Idanha hotel, Ste. Chappelle Winery's summer concert series or with his jazz sextet at Sun Valley. He has played with such greats as Red Rodney, Conti Condoli, Randy Brecker, Ernie Watts, Carl Fontana, Bill Watrous, Gary Burton, as well as shows with the Temptations, Jim Nabors, Rich Little, Chris Riddle, Manheim Steamroller and others. He has been a member of Denver's Neophonic Jazz Orchestra, Rumble Seat, and wedding band Dressed in Black
Garner is currently a member of Portland Oregon based group The Midnight Serenaders.
